Youth & Opens Claim 9th Consecutive Champion Club Title

Trigg Island SLSC’s surf sports program has for the 9th Year in a row won the SunSmart WA Surf Lifesaving Championships Champion Club Pennant.
Going into the final weekend of events (Surf) at Scarboro Beach, Trigg was overall sitting in 2nd position, closely behind Sorrento SLSC, and in the final 2 days of racing were able to put on a dominant performance, seeing them take the championship 59 points clear of the Sorrento, who placed 2nd.
Whilst it was an impressive team effort, that saw Trigg Island collect 526 Points in surf events alone, it was the girls who dominated the events, with their performances amounting to more than 80% of the total points.

After the event finished on Sunday, members gathered at the club to enjoy a meal of paella and a few drinks from the bar, where they recounted their favourite moments from the weekend. These moments included Blake Monaghan’s State Title win in the U17 Board Race, and in the Open Women Board Race, Trigg Finishing in the top 7 positions.

Surf Sports Director, Jeremy Hunter, Congratulated the athletes, coaches, supporters, and families on the team’s success, as did Club Competition Captains, Jazmin Shipway-Carr and Jake Smith, who highlighted that this win was a club effort, how impressive the women were on their performances (with Jaz challenging the boys to step up), and the importance of parents and families support in the competitors life, urging them to thank their families for the work they do.
Coach Mozzy, broke down all the performances and allowed our gold medallists to be recognized by calling them up to the front of the room. It was here that life member and club legend, Mike Cook, came up to present the Mike Cook Trophy to a competitor who was tenacious, gracious, and upheld club values. This year the recipient of the Mike Cook Trophy was Annika Negus.
Unfortunately, Club President, Cas Ryan, was unwell and couldn’t attend, however, Director of Finance (and SLSWA’s commentator) Hayden Marchetto, rounded out the speeches in her place, congratulating everyone and giving out words of wisdom, inspired by Simon Sinek’s Infinite game, the power of long-term thinking and the growth mindset.

We’d like to extend our congratulations to all competitors, but most importantly to coach Andrew Mosel who has been integral to the growth and dominance of the Surf Sports program here at Trigg Island SLSC. Mozzy has been supported by many coaches in all different fields of expertise this season, and to them, we’d like to express a huge thank you and congratulations. We’d also like to congratulate Jeremy Hunter, Surf Sport Director, who in his first season as Director, saw Trigg retain the title, under his support and passion for the club.

Wins like this are a club effort, from families to supporters to the volunteers that set up and pack down, and the administration who assist in entries and prepare for the events, and so many more. Wins like this wouldn’t happen without those members and people, getting behind the club and pushing all the competitors to be their best through the support they offer.

With Aussies only weeks away now, training continues, and we prepare to push for bigger and better, on the national stage.
