On Saturday Night, we packed out the club rooms for a sold out 2024 Annual Awards Dinner at Trigg Island SLSC!!! Members, sponsors, stakeholders, and families came together to celebrate what has been achieved in the 2023/2024 season across all areas of Surf Lifesaving.
A special thank you to those who gave their time to help set up and pack down the night. Volunteerism is at the heart of what we do, and to see so many members step up and help was amazing.
Of course nights like tonight, couldn’t happen without someone spearheading the operation so an extra special thank you is extended to our club administrator, Bronwyn Meldrum, who oversaw the event organization, and made sure everything was perfect for the night.

Trigg Islands Club Captain, Peter Savage, was presented with his Life Membership badge, at our Annual Awards Dinner on Saturday Night.
Peter joined Trigg Island SLSC 30 years ago, and has become a stalwart member of our organization, always wiling to roll up his sleeves for the betterment of the club and the experience it has on our members. He has shared his passion for the Surf Lifesaving Movement with many, including his children, who share the same love for the ocean and surf club as he does.
Pete was thoroughly surprised to find his family had joined to celebrate the occasion with him, including son Will, who has been living on the East Coast, training and competing in the past Nutrigrain Ironman Series.
Trainer of the Year: Kevin Edwards
For his ongoing commitment to the training of our junior members, obtaining their awards.
Assessor of the Year: John Rhatigan
John has been active in the assessment of members in their proficiencies, by conducting Bronze Medallions assessments, facilitating ARTC courses, and providing IRB training.
Youth Lifesaver of the Year: Bo Watters
Bo was awarded Youth Lifesaver of the Year for his mature approach to his role in lifesaving, he consistently volunteers to activities and spends a lot of time on his board in water practicing his rescue skills, which came in handy during a rescue late last year.
Lifesaver of the Year: Sajih Samia
Sajih has shown dedication to his role in lifesaving throughout the year. Despite working away FIFO, Sajih has always made himself readily available to assist and volunteer, whether its in his regular patrols, proxies, and abalone patrols.
Unfortunately Sajih was away working, and so wasn’t available to collect his award.
Patrol Captain of the Year: John Whitaker
John has been a great asset to the club this season. Stepping in as the Patrol Captain for the Carnival patrol. The Carnival patrol, is a valuable tool for when athletes and regular patrolling members are away competing. John makes sure that this patrol is fun for those who cover, and truly rallies the troops to protect the public on our beaches.
Realty Lane Youth Female Athlete of the Year: Annika Negus & Eleanor Flowers
This year, ๐๐ป๐ป๐ถ๐ธ๐ฎ ๐ก๐ฒ๐ด๐๐ & ๐๐น๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ป๐ผ๐ฟ ๐๐น๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ were both awarded Youth Female Athlete of the Year. Annika had a standout season, highlighted by her role in the U17 Board Relay Gold Medal Team at Aussies. Eleanor excelled in both the pool and open water, winning multiple medals at the pool rescue Aussies and being a finalist in the open water swim. Congratulations, ladies!
Realty Lane Youth Male Athlete of the Year: Trent Yates
This season, Trent joined Trigg Island SLSC and made a significant impact. Dominant on the beach, he won Gold in the U14 beach flags, U14 Beach Sprint, and U13/14 Beach Relay at the 2023 Aussies. Additionally, he was part of the Bronze medal-winning U14 Cameron Relay team.
Realty Lane Female Athlete of the Year: Jazmin Shipway Carr
Club Competition Captain Jazmin Shipway-Carr aimed to finish in the top 5 in the single ski race at Aussies, a goal she successfully achieved. In addition, Jaz became the 2024 State Single Ski Champion and a key member of the Western Suns team, establishing herself as a dominant force in the sport. Her remarkable achievements and determination have earned her the title of 2023/24 Female Athlete of the Year.
Realty Lane Male Athlete of the Year: Harrison Hynes
This season, Harrison broke a world record and two national records at the Pool Rescue Australian Championships. He was named to the Pool Rescue Australian World Championship Team and served as the Australian Captain for the Commonwealth Lifesaving Championships last year. For his outstanding achievements and promising future, Harrison has been awarded Male Athlete of the Year.
Life Members Rising Star Award: Billy Hawkes and Oliver Browne
Billy has had an amazing season competing in both water and beach events. Selected as a representative in the Western Suns team earlier this year and recognised as a finalist for the Nipper & Youth Awards Athlete of the Year, Billy has gone from strength to strength, proving that his hard work is paying off.
At the State Titles he won 4 gold medals and 2 Silver medals and is the U14 Board Champion.ย
At the Australian Titles he won a gold, a silver, and 2 bronze medals, and in total made 5 finals finishing within the top 5.
Olly was recognised last week as the 23/24 Season U14 Surf Sports Age Champion at the Nipper & Youth Awards, topping off another incredible season of competition. He was also selected as a Western Suns representative earlier this year, and a finalist for the Nipper & Youth Awards Athlete of the Year. Olly is a fierce competitor who has represented Trigg Island with tenacity and pride.
At the state titles he won a 3 gold medals, a silver, and a bronze medal, and is the U14 Ironman, and Surf Race Champion.
At the Australian Titles Olly was a finalist in all 3 Individual events, and won 2 Gold medals, and a bronze.
Annette Greenhill Award : Arielle Butler
For many years Arielle has been known as a quiet achiever of the club, with this season being a standout season for her as she competed across multiple areas of the Surf Lifesaving disciplines.
At the 2024 state championships Arielle won gold, and silver in the R & R, as well as a silver medal in the March Past. On top of this Arielle competed in a range of surf sports events.
Away from her commitments in competition, she also dedicates time each Sunday to assist with our Nippers and water safety.
The Spirit of St. Mary’s Award: Morgan Buck
Morgan is a positive, keen learner, who has volunteered a lot of her time to the Trigg Island community. In March she completed her silver level Youth Leadership Award, and over 3 days assisted with the training of an SRC group. She shows maturity above her years and demonstrates a great knowledge of the skills and abilities needed to reinforce the tasks being undertaken.
This season Morgan unfortunately broke her hand, however that didnโt stop her from undertaking roles within our club, not only assisting in various tasks but undertaking her final patrol with the injury.
Most Sundays Morgan assists with the Nippers, helping them in the water, and this season performed a rescue during a Nipper Sunday event, which was carried out successfully.
Morgan consistently exhibits the Trigg Island values, which is a credit not only to herself, but her family, and her peers.
U14 Best Club Person: Holly Shiels
Holly has immersed herself into surf lifesaving, completing both her bronze, and silver Youth Leadership awards, and gaining her Youth Age Manager, Youth Trainer, and Youth Official Awards this season, ย using these skills throughout the year to assist with Nippers, working closely with Age Managers, and officiating at youth carnivals.
This season she competed at the state championships, winning gold and silver medals in R & R, as well as a silver medal in the March Past. On top of this, Holly undertook an officiating role at the State Championships.
Throughout the holidays, Holly showed commitment to her colleagues, by spending 4 days training the U13 SRC, and assisting with the Bronze Group assessment. Holly always has a positive and vibrant attitude, looking after others and demonstrates care and concern for her fellow Trigg members.
U15 Best Club Person: Indiah Reidy
Indiah is an outstanding youth member of Trigg, undertaking all activities with excellence and consistently follows the Trigg Values. Indiah is a well-regarded youth official across SLSWA and has been nominated as a finalist for the 2023/24 SLSWA Youth Official of the Year.
She is recognised as an outstanding trainer and shows maturity beyond her years, working well with others and supporting her peers.
Indiah is a member of the Trigg Youth Advisory Committee and plays an important role in supporting Youth activities throughout the summer.
Indiah has completed her Gold Youth Leadership Award, presented last week at the SLSWA Nipper & Youth Awards, and was also recognised as the Youth Achiever of the Year
U17 Best Club Person: Peyton Maguire
Peyton completed her Gold Youth Leadership Award this year and holds her Youth Trainer, and Youth Age Group Manager Award, and currently completing her Youth Coaching Award.
This season she has shown great leadership to our young members, working as the U7 Nipper Age Group Manager. As a trainer, Peyton shows a great depth of knowledge and understanding, empowering her confidence, and her ability to develop skills in others. A member of the Gold medal winning U23 March Past Team at States, an U23 Boat crew member and currently learning to ski paddle, Peyton is keen to immerse herself in all things Surf Lifesaving.
Currently undertaking her Silver Medallion in beach management, which upon completion enables her to be eligible to be a Patrol Captain, Peyton continues prove through her desire to grow, and dedication, why she is an extremely valuable member of Trigg Island
U19 Best Club Person: Julia Suffell
This season Julia became the SRC Coordinator alongside Jen Taylor, in which she supported Jen in running SRC Courses, additionally, Julia volunteers and supports the running of the Bronze Medallion Courses.
Throughout the season, Julia has grown and become an integral member of the Trigg Island community. As well as her role as SRC Coordinator, Julia is a member of the Youth Advisory Committee, supporting the growth of the Youth program at Trigg Island.
Julia is also a keen competitor, as a member of the IRB Racing Team, and the U23 Boat Crew. Within the IRB Racing Team, Julia has been working to promote the sport with our club, increasing awareness and engagement.
Julia throws herself into all aspects of Surf Club and is always available to assist, she is a well-respected trainer and someone who goes above and beyond for our club.
Karrinyup Rotary “Service Above Self” Award: Jenny Taylor
Jen’s dedication to the Surf Lifesaving Movement spans an impressive 49 years, 26 of those being a member of Trigg Island, during which she has exhibited an unparalleled commitment.
Whether it is spending time in the boatshed, fixing boards, and auditing equipment, working closely with various directors and coordinators, through to her work as Youth Leadership Program Coordinator and a mentor to our young members, Jen has significant involvement, year-round with our club.

NRC Coordinator, Bronze & SRC Trainer / Assesor, Nipper AGM assistant and Water Safety, Surf Sports Official, Silver Salties fitness trainer, Long Board Transition Coach, and Youth Trainer.
Jen often steps in as a proxy for youth members on patrol, and is consistently willing to step up as a patrol captain or vice, when numbers are low.
In addition to her ongoing volunteerism, Jen competes as a master across multiple disciplines, whilst also undertaking role as team manager when required.
Jen is a proactive member of Trigg Island SLSC, and uses her experience and knowledge to enrich the lives of all members across all disciplines, she truly embodies the notion of โService above Selfโ.
Open Best Club Person: Kirk Phillips
Kirk has been described as the epitome of volunteerism.
Since moving to Trigg Island SLSC from Quinns Mindarie SLSC in 2016, Kirk has dedicated countless hours to the betterment and growth of our club. His efforts are second to none, with even injury not holding him back from giving time to our organisation and members.
From the day he stepped foot on our beach, Kirk has found ways to inspire growth, initially volunteering within Nippers, and rapidly progressing to become an Age Manager within a year, where he stayed as AGM from U9โs through to U13โs.
This year, Kirk was our Nipper Safety Coordinator, ensuring the safety of our youngest members, and enriching their Trigg Island experience. Kirk leads discussion at Nipper Committee meetings on water and member safety issues and brings positive solutions to accommodate all. His role sees him managing the water safety and personnel for all sessions and events, whilst ensuring uniform application of policies effectively. This season Kirk mentored youth members who assisted Nippers, guiding them with training and providing key insights on how to effectively perform the role.
It should be noted that Kirk, despite his extensive travel to get to our beach from home, is always the first one here, and the last one to leave. Not to be taken advantage of, Kirk is a yes man when it comes to aiding others, always helping those in need. ย
Kirk also dedicates time to his passion of IRB Racing, as a member of the Trigg Island IRB Racing Team, actively trying to recruit members from all areas of the club, with a welcoming and inclusive approach.
A family man at heart, Kirk understands the importance of giving and the impact that Trigg Island has on not only his family, but the impact it has on the greater community.
