Some of the worlds best athletes descended onto Australian shores, to compete in the 2024 Lifesaving World Championships. For over 2 weeks, we saw competitors compete in Interclub, Master Youth & Open events across the pool, ocean and beach, as well as the National team competing in Youth and Open events.
Trigg Island SLSC were represented by 2 members in the National team, Jake Smith, and Harrison Hynes, with Jake Smith being given the honor of Captaincy. In the interclub events, we were represented by a small but mighty team! Cas Ryan, and Michael Cook travelled for the Masters events, and in the Youth / Open, Jake Smith, Harrison Hynes, Kelton Rothnie, Olivia Doddy, Joel Doddy, Eleanor Flowers, and Steven Kent. For Harrison and Jake, this was the first time at a World Championship event that they could represent Trigg Island SLSC, and fittingly it was on Australian soil.
Across the interclub events we tallied a total of 6 medals. Michael “Cookie” Cook demonstrated that not only is he a National Champion of the sea, but an World Championship medalist, finishing 2nd in the Male Surf Race.
Our relay teams also proved dominant, with Jake, Kelton, Harrison, and Steven making finals in all relays, and finishing with a World Championship title in the 4x50m Medley Relay, and a silver in the 4x50m Obstacle Relay.
However, one of the best performances of the whole carnival came from Trigg Island SLSC member Harrison Hynes, who in the National Events, broke his own world record and became a World Champion, in the 100m Manikin Tow with Fins, touching the wall in a blitzing time of 47.68 seconds.
This performance, along with the 7 medal contribution and 11 finals appearance from both Jake and Harrison, helped the National Lifesaving Team clinch their 2nd consecutive World Team Championship, an outstanding effort.
Away from the competition, Trigg Island SLSC was also represented by Declan Burke, Daryl Griffin, Norm Gibbs, and Carol Gibbs, who travelled over voluntarily to officiate over the 2 weeks of competition.
Congratulations to all Trigg Island SLSC members who competed and travelled for the World Championships. We’re all incredibly proud of your achievements, and look forward to seeing the continued development over the coming years.
